New Baby Orangutan Born in Bioparc Fuengirola

New Baby Orangutan at Bioparc FuengirolaOur friends at Bioparc Fuengirola are celebrating the birth of the latest member of their large animal family, a baby Borneo orangutan.

This baby orangutan’s mother, Suli, is handling motherhood well (this is her first baby) and is proving to be a caring and dedicated mum. Apparently, orangutans are the primates which dedicate most time to the upbringing of their young; normally until they reach the age of seven and without having any other offspring during this time. In comparison, gorillas and chimpanzees tend to dedicate 4 or 5 years to their young’s upbringing and, sometimes, looking after several at the same time. (more…)

Fuengirola’s Bioparc Zoo Opens New Exhibit, Home to World’s Biggest Dragon

New Indo-Pacific Exhibit at Bioparc FuengirolaBioparc Zoo in Fuengirola is one of our favourite family attractions on the Costa del Sol and, as of last Friday, it’s going to be even better! Why? Because they have opened the spectacular new habitat designed to emulate the Indo-Pacific region.

This new exhibit will take visitors on a voyage from Asia to the Americas via the islands of the South Pacific. Featuring species from Java, Borneo, Bali, the Philippines, New Guinea and the Galapagos Islands, perhaps the most impressive new inhabitant of the Park is the Komodo Dragon – the largest one in the world!  (more…)

Lion Cub at Zoo de Castellar

Simba the lion cub

A few weeks ago I spotted an interesting photo on a friend’s Facebook page; she was petting a lion cub!!! Turns out the picture was taken at ‘Zoo de Castellar’ a very special place which serves as a rescue centre for all sorts of animals.

Started as a private animal sanctuary way back in 1998, it actually opened to the public in 2002; this has to be one of the Coast’s best kept secrets!

Of course, with two young children, we had to go and see what all the fuss was about. After a quick check on Google Maps, we prepared a pack lunch and set off, for what turned out to be, an amazing family day out. (more…)

An Afternoon at Bioparc [Photos]

This summer one of our colleagues braved the hot weather to visit Fuengirola’s famous zoo, Bioparc; he tells us it was definitely worth the sacrifice 😉

Who would have thought that you could find such a beautiful spot full of the most fascinating wildlife in the centre of town. Although the park is quite small, don’t let this put you off. The design and layout of the park is spectacular and at times you really do feel as if you are walking through the jungles of Asia or the African Savanna.

In the photos below you’ll see a small sample of the animals and birdlife that inhabit Bioparc. You’ll notice that a lot of effort has gone into creating installations and scenery which mimic the animals natural habitat; the tiger’s area is absolutely amazing!

If you’ve yet to visit Bioparc, we hope these photos will help convince you to visit next time you are on holiday on the Costa del Sol 🙂
