Although better known as a sun and beach holiday destination, Benalmadena also offers many entertaining activities during the quieter and cooler winter months. Our Leisure Desk can also advise you how best to get to the start of the walking routes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 1: Arroyo de los Muertos<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"490\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-1.png\" alt=\"Map of Rote 1 walking route in Benalmadena\" class=\"wp-image-4963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-1.png 490w, https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-1-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This route has two variants, \u2018Calamorro\u2019 and \u2018Ermita. \u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Calamorro Route<\/em><\/strong><b><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance:<\/strong> Approx. 3.5 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty Level<\/strong>: Low<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Arroyo de la Miel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route starts off just behind the Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez Public School (see map above). You\u2019ll make your way through a tunnel under the motorway and head up the mountain. Soon, you&#8217;ll come to a crossing; heading left will take you to the ermita (chapel) \u2013 See below \u2013 and if you take the trail on the right, you\u2019ll go all the way to the top of the <strong>Calamorro mountain<\/strong> (where the cable car stops). Those of you who have taken the cable car will know that the views from here are simply spectacular &#8211; and well worth the hike.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Ermita Route<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 2 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Medium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Arroyo de la Miel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starts from the same place as the above \u2018Calamorro Route\u2019. You won\u2019t go all the way to the top of the mountain following this route, but the views from the ermita (chapel) are equally impressive. The last part of the route is a little steep, hence the reason for giving it a \u2018medium\u2019 difficulty level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 2: Los Le\u00f1adores<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"247\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-2.png\" alt=\"Map of Route 2 Benalmadena Walking routes\" class=\"wp-image-4964\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 2.5 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Medium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Benalm\u00e1dena<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access to this route is from the A-368 road joining Torremolinos and Benalmadena (Km 7). This is another short route with an easier start on tarmac until you reach the Benalm\u00e1dena quarry; the next couple of hundred metres is quite steep until you clear the quarry. From that point on, it\u2019s more of a gentle climb to the Puerto Viejo area near the top of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlights of this route are the views over the town of Benalm\u00e1dena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 3: El Quejigal<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-3.png\" alt=\"Map of route 3 - Benalmadena Walking Routes\" class=\"wp-image-4965\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 3 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Low<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Benalmadena<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Route 3 (R-3) starts from a sharp corner on the A-368 road (very near to the start of Route 2). You\u2019ll make your way through a viaduct under the motorway and head up through a pine forest. Follow the trail all the way up to the area known as <strong>El Quejigal, an area of great ecological value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to see different species of eagles hunting for prey as well as mountain goats climbing the rocky walls of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 4: Tajo de la Sabia<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"338\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-4.png\" alt=\"Map of Route 4 - Walking and hiking routes in Benalmadena\" class=\"wp-image-4968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-4.png 338w, https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-4-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 3.5 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Medium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Benalmadena Pueblo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route starts from Benalmadena Pueblo (see map) and has a choice of two trails, one taking you through a pine forest and the other a more direct route up the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you near the summit, you\u2019ll go through what is perhaps <strong>one of the more densely populated pine forests<\/strong> in the area; a great place to stop and enjoy the peace and tranquility \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\">Start planning your walking holiday! Book your stay at Sunset Beach Club Now &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 5: Mina de la Trinidad<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"397\" height=\"238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-5.png\" alt=\"Map of Route 5 - Benalmadena Walking and hiking routes\" class=\"wp-image-4969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-5.png 397w, https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-5-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 6 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Medium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Benalmadena<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More or less one kilometre from Benalmadena Pueblo (heading towards Mijas) on the A-368 road, there\u2019s a trail on the right-hand side; this is the start of the Route 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This route takes you past an old mine (Mina de la Trinidad)<\/strong>. Although dangerous and only recommended for experienced hikers, you can go into the mine, which has various galleries with geological formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the route is a steady climb to the \u2018Cerro del Moro\u2019 where you can stop and contemplate the breathtaking views over the Costa del Sol and, on a clear day, over towards Gibraltar and North Africa. This is also the start of Route 6, which we talk about next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 6: Los Cazadores<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-6.png\" alt=\"MAp of Route 6 - Benalmadena Walking and hiking routes\" class=\"wp-image-4970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-6.png 374w, https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Route-6-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Distance<\/strong>: Approx. 4.5 km<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: Low<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starts from<\/strong>: Benalmadena (Cerro del Moro)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This route starts at an <strong>altitude of over 900 metres<\/strong> and takes you on a gentle downward slope along the mountain ridge towards the Puerto Viejo area. Due to its location, this route actually joins on to many of the other routes mentioned above (see map).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can join Route 1 here and challenge yourself by climbing the steep trail (150m change in altitude) up to the top of the Calamorro Mountain; as mentioned earlier, the views from here are spectacular, making it the ideal spot for a great photo! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A few Recommendations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on exploring one of these amazing routes, there are just a few things you need to keep in mind in order to make your walk more enjoyable and help look after the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use comfortable footwear (boots or trainers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect yourself from the weather conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect the environment (no camping, no motor vehicles, no camp fires or barbecues allowed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not leave litter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect the plants and flowers (Do not cut flowers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid fire risks (Do not smoke)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always walk on the paths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We certainly hope you won&#8217;t need them, but just in case, here are some of the <strong>emergency service numbers to call in case of an accident or medical emergency:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emergencies<\/strong>: 112<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Local Police<\/strong>: 092 or 952 562 142<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fire department:<\/strong> 080 or 952 563 429<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protecci\u00f3n Civil<\/strong>: 952 562 655<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what do you think, will you be attempting one of these fabulous <strong>walking and hiking routes<\/strong> the next time you are in Benalm\u00e1dena?
