The sight of the gigantic thrones (known as Tronos) being carried by over 200 men and the colourful costumes worn by members of the brotherhoods, the smell of fresh flowers and burning incense, the sound of music and crowds cheering and singing\u2026 truly memorable! <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Malaga<\/b><b>\u2019s Semana Santa celebrations<\/b> date back almost 500 years to the times of the Catholic Kings. This week of profound devotion and passion is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the city\u2019s calendar. (You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/holiday-tips\/semana-santa-holy-week-an-experience-not-to-be-missed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">read more about Malaga\u2019s Holy Week HERE<\/span><\/b>)&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than 44 brotherhoods parade their \u2018Tronos\u2019 through the streets of Malaga during Holy Week; below, we\u2019ve highlighted <b>some of the most important and popular ones,<\/b> which you may wish to watch.<\/p>\n<p>Although each of these processions has a specific itinerary and route through the streets of M\u00e1laga, all share a specific stretch (Known as the <b>\u2018official route\u2019<\/b>) which takes them through the main \u2018Tribuna\u2019 (Alameda) and the famous Calle Larios; this is probably the best place to watch the processions.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of the most important processions together with the time they are due to pass through the &#8216;<b>official route<\/b><strong style=\"color: initial;\">\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Palm Sunday (29th March)<\/h3>\n<p><b>La Pollinica<\/b>: The brotherhood with the largest following in Malaga; this is the first of the Easter Processions \u2013 Passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 12:00 pm<\/p>\n<h3>Monday (30th March)<\/h3>\n<p><b>El Cautivo<\/b>: Probably the most well-known brotherhood in Malaga and with a massive following. Passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 8:30 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>Tuesday (31st March)<\/h3>\n<p><b>Virgen de las Penas:<\/b> With her spectacular vale made of fresh flowers, this \u2018Virgen\u2019 passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area 6:40 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>Wednesday (1st April)<\/h3>\n<p><b>Jes\u00fas El Rico:<\/b> Famous for its tradition of freeing a convict from prison every year (a privilege granted in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century by Carlos III) this procession passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 9:04 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>Maundy Thursday (2nd April)<\/h3>\n<p><b>Cristo de Mena (also known as Cristo de la Buena Muerte):<\/b> Arriving in Malaga port at around 11:00 am, escorted by the Spanish Foreign Legion, this is probably the most popular and certainly the most spectacular of the Easter processions. The procession also passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area later in the evening at approximately 8:20 pm.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the Cristo de Mena Procession<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gSJIVNL7WVE?rel=0\" width=\"760\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Virgen de la Esperanza:<\/b> This enormous throne is actually the largest of all that take part in Holy Week \u2013 it passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 11:10 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>Good Friday (3rd April)<\/h3>\n<p><b>Calvario:<\/b> Leaves from \u2018Monte San Crist\u00f3bal\u2019 on a long route which takes it past the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 6:40 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>Easter Sunday (5th April)<\/h3>\n<p><b>Cristo Resucitado:<\/b> This is the main procession on Easter Sunday and passes by the main &#8216;Tribuna&#8217; area at 11:05 am.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been to the Easter Processions in Malaga?
