\"CaminitoIt\u2019s been described as the world\u2019s scariest \u2013 and until recently \u2013  most dangerous walkway in the world and it\u2019s reopening to the public on the 28th<\/sup> March 2015. We are, of course, talking about the Caminito del Rey<\/em> (King\u2019s Walkway)<\/strong> situated in the Gaitanes  Gorge, about 1 hour  north of Benalm\u00e1dena.<\/p>\n

This breathtaking walkway which, in certain areas, towers 100 metres above the river bed, has been closed to the public since 2001. The 100 year old path was in a precarious condition and local authorities decided to close it after a series of fatal accidents. Although officially closed, it\u2019s remained a favourite attraction for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies<\/strong> looking for the ultimate experience (see video below for proof!).<\/p>\n

The stunning landscape surrounding the Caminito del Rey<\/em><\/strong>, the breathtaking views visitors can enjoy from its narrow pathways and the area\u2019s undeniable value as a tourist attraction have led local authorities (Andalucian Local Government, Malaga Tourist Board and the Town Halls of Alora, Antequera and Ardales) to invest \u20ac2.5 million on the rehabilitation, renovation and repairing of the famous walkway. This work has now been completed and the Caminito<\/em> is, once again, ready to welcome visitors and the general public, providing an unforgettable experience for all who dare to walk along its newly-laid wooden walkway!<\/p>\n

A few interesting, historic facts about the Caminito del Rey\u2026<\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/h3>\n

  • It was built between 1901 and 1905<\/strong> and the construction work was carried out by fishermen! (Yes, you read that right!).<\/li>\n
  • These brave workers had to work in life threatening conditions which involved hanging over the gorge secured to the top of the rock wall by a mere rope!<\/li>\n
  • The walkway was commissioned by the Hydroelectric company of El Chorro (Sociedad Hidroel\u00e9ctrica del Chorro), owner of the areas known as Saltos del Chorro and Gaitanejo.<\/li>\n
  • The Caminito del Rey<\/em> owes its name to a visit by King Alfonso XIII<\/strong>. The monarch bravely walked along the whole path on the 21st<\/sup> May 1921 whilst visiting the area to officially open the El Chorro dam, now known as Conde de Guadalhorce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As mentioned earlier, the Caminito<\/em> has been a popular attraction for daredevil\u2019s looking for an adrenaline-filled experience. At over 100 years of age, the pathway was starting to show serious signs of decay due to rock falls damaging its concrete structure and the wear and tear one would expect after so many years of use.<\/p>\n
