{"id":6118,"date":"2015-10-06T13:52:38","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T11:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/?p=6118"},"modified":"2015-10-06T13:52:38","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T11:52:38","slug":"mijas-village-relives-the-napoleonic-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/whats-on\/mijas-village-relives-the-napoleonic-invasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Mijas Village Relives the Napoleonic Invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-via=\"sunsetbeachclub\" data-count=\"vertical\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/whats-on\/mijas-village-relives-the-napoleonic-invasion\/\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6119\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Recreation-of-the-napoleonic-invasion-of-Mijas-Pueblo.jpg\" alt=\"Recreation of the napoleonic invasion of Mijas Pueblo\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Recreation-of-the-napoleonic-invasion-of-Mijas-Pueblo.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.sunsetbeachclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Recreation-of-the-napoleonic-invasion-of-Mijas-Pueblo-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/>This weekend \u2013 10<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 11<sup>th<\/sup> October \u2013 <strong>the village of Mijas will be recreating the Napoleonic invasion of 1808, a historic event when the villagers had to defend their homes from Napoleon troops.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mijas Town Hall has been organising this event since 2009 together with the Torrijos 1831 Cultural &amp; Historic Association; its uniqueness has certainly increased its popularity since then!<\/p>\n<p>To add a little more flavour to the events, this year, the local artisans and business associations have decided to contribute to the activities by putting on an <strong>Artisans Market<\/strong> offering all sorts 19<sup>th<\/sup> century themed goodies including: soaps, crystal and glass products, leather goods and Mexican jewellery which, in those times, were shipped to Spain from the New World.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The local business association will also install a themed bar next to the market. All the people working on the market stalls and in the bar will be dressed in traditional costumes from the early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, adding to the events originality.<\/p>\n<p>In order to recreate scenes of the invasion by Napoleon\u2019s troops, the event will also have a dozen riders on horseback (from the Pe\u00f1a Mije\u00f1a) and approximately 40 members of the Torrijos 1831 Cultural &amp; Historic Association who will be in charge of acting out the different scenes of the invasion.<\/p>\n<h3>Times of the recreations:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Saturday 10<sup>th<\/sup> October at 8:30pm in the \u2018Plaza de la Libertad\u2019<\/strong>: A representation of the M\u00e1laga regiment\u2019s retreat into Mijas and a reading from the mayor alerting villagers of the arrival of Napoleon\u2019s troops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday 11<sup>th<\/sup> October from 11:30am<\/strong>: You\u2019ll be able to watch the following recreations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The arrival of the French troops<\/li>\n<li>A skirmish between French soldiers and the local resistance<\/li>\n<li>The capture of local soldiers and British troops \u2013 included the infamous General Blayney \u2013 in the failed attempt to take Sohail Castle, which in those days belonged to Mijas.<\/li>\n<li>The arrival of General Ballesteros and the consequent departure of the French troops from Mijas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visitors will also be able to enjoy traditional flamenco shows before each of the recreations and the organisers will also hold a contest to choose the best costumes worn by men, women and children taking part in the event. The winner will be announced at 6:00pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe musn\u2019t forget that Mijas was a key location in this conflict due to it\u2019s privileged topographic location and because it\u00a0supplied around 90 young men to the Malaga Regiment to fight against the French troops.
