Barretstown, a serious fun camp!
Barretstown is a specially-designed camp that provides Therapeutic Recreation programmes for children with serious illnesses and their families; their mission is to rebuild the lives of children (and their families) affected by serious illness. They believe that every child with serious illness should enjoy their childhood.
Excellent, unobtrusive medical supervision helps children with cancer and other diseases forget illness, learn to have fun and rebuild their confidence and self-esteem. The programmes take place at a fairytale castle in the beautiful foothills of Ireland’sWicklow Mountains. Barretstown is much more than a holiday – their summer camps for children, and spring and autumn weekend camps for families, are carefully-directed psychosocial support programmes of Therapeutic Recreation.
Founded by Hollywood actor Paul Newman in 1994 and modelled on his renowned Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut,USA. Barretstown serves children affected by serious illnesses – primarily cancer and serious blood diseases – fromIreland,Britain,Spainand throughout Europe, and their families.
All of the children and families who go to Barretstown do so free of charge. Everything, including accommodation, food, medical assistance and round-trip airfares are provided at no cost to the family. Barretstown is supported by donations and the fundraising efforts of corporate supporters, individuals and community groups.
Sunset Beach Club will be working closely with Barretstown’s Spanish Co-ordinator based in Madrid in an effort to help raise funds which will allow Spanish children suffering serious illness to travel to Barretstown.
Our goal: Help raise funds so that children from Spain can travel to Barretstown’s facilities for a special holiday.
