The city of Malaga is quickly becoming one of the most attractive Cultural destinations amongst international travellers. The town hall has invested heavily in the growth of its historical and artistic heritage and now offers visitors an impressive collection of more than 30 museums, each with its own unique and varied theme.

The most popular include The Picasso Museum, Centre Pompidou and the Carmen Thyssen museum and each attracts hundreds of thousands of art enthusiasts every year. However, Malaga has other museums which, although not as famous, are definitely worth a visit.

Below you’ll find information on six of our favourite Malaga museums you might not have heard of.

Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Málaga (CAC)

Malaga’s museum of contemporary art opened to the public on the 17th February 2003 and fulfils the Malaga City Councils objective of spreading the popularity of visual and plastic art from the 1970’s to the present day.

This unique museum is characterised by its dynamism and the importance it places on reflexion, teaching and dissemination of contemporary art. The CAC Málaga offers a wide range of activities allowing visitors to reflect on the sources and influences of contemporary art and which encourages participation.

The museum has hosted exhibitions which have been pioneering in the Spanish art scene, focusing on the presence of artists who have never before exhibited in Spain, as well as offering seminars and courses which allow participants to expand their knowledge of all aspects of contemporary art.

Museo Automovilístico de Málaga (Automobile Museum)

This wonderful museum takes you on a voyage through the artistic evolution of the 20th century with a fascinating exhibit of restored classic cars, haute couture and contemporary art.

Located in the old ‘Tabacalera’ building, the old tobacco factory dating back to 1923, the museum offers visitors almost 6000 square metres of exhibition space.

You’ll find incredible cars from legendary manufacturers like Bugatti, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Ferrari kitted out with stunning upholstery and precious wood dashboards. The Haute Couture collection features exclusive creations by some of the 20th century’s greatest designers including, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy and Valentino as well as a large collection of vintage hats from designers like Balenciaga. Some of the most impressive articles of clothing include dresses belonging to Lady Gaga and Madonna and one of Michael Jackson’s jackets.

This is definitely a museum to be enjoyed by all the family as there really is something for everyone, from the little ones to grandparents!

Museo del Vidrio y Cristal de Málaga

The Museum of Glass and Cristal has to be one of Malaga’s most exquisite and unique museums.

Located in a restored 18th century palace, this it contains a private collection with some of the most beautiful and artistic glass and crystal pieces. Visitors can view 3000 pieces of glass and crystal from a variety of different cultures and time periods including ancient Egypt, Roman, Venetian and the Muslim World.

The Palace’s exquisite decoration and furniture – which correspond to the specific time period from which the exhibits derive – make this museum experience all the more special.

Museo del Vino Málaga

The ‘Museo del Vino Málaga’ (Malaga Wine Museum) is located in the Palacio de Biedmas, a restored 18th century building in the city’s historic centre.

Here visitors will learn about the art, history and culture of wines produced in the province of Malaga. The museum boasts an impressive collection of more than 400 lithographs (wine bottle labels and posters from the end of the 19th century to the start of the 20th century), a wine tasting room and a special classroom for teaching and training purposes.

More than a museum, it’s an educational institution whose aim is to spread the culture of wine, and more specifically, wine produced in the Malaga province, as well as train others in techniques such as production, conservation and promotion.

Museo Interactivo de la Música (MIMMA)

The MIMMA is an interactive music museum located in the old ‘Conde de Navas’ Palace dating back to the 18th century.

A visit to this museum promises and fun and educational experience and is especially suited to families with kids. The whole experience is designed to encourage participation and interaction.

You’ll find an impressive collection of musical instruments from all over the world and from different periods in time. A visit to this beautiful museum is about more than just seeing musical instruments, it’s about learning different cultures from around the world through their music.

Museum of Imagination

This relatively new addition to Málaga opened in 2018 and provides visitors with the opportunity to experience the world of illusions. A great escape from the fast-paced world that we live in, where both children and adults can explore new things and be surprised by visual illusions, music that can be heard not only with your ears, an exciting game of light and shadow, and much more.

The interactive museum of illusions in Malaga is sure to bring out the child in adults, and the imagination in children. There is also a children’s supervised playroom for toddlers.
