It’s Andalucia Day Tomorrow: We Suggest the Following…

Andalucia DayTomorrow (28th February) is Andalucia Day or “ Día de Andalucia”. Apart from being a public holiday in all of the Andalusian region – shops and businesses will be closed – Andalucia Day is a special day… It commemorates the February 28th, 1980 referendum on the Statute of the Autonomy of Andalucia in which the Andalucian people voted to make Andalucia an autonomous community of Spain.

If you are walking through the streets of any Andalucian town or city, don’t be surprised if you see green and white flags decorating the balconies of many buildings; it’s also common for various cultural competitions to be held in conjunction with this special day on the Andalucian calendar.

Here are a couple of suggestions on ways to spend Andalucia Day:

1)      The Thyssen Museum in Málaga is offering free entrance to all visitors tomorrow the 28th February. If you haven’t been, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Take the train or bus into the centre of Málaga, visit the museum and then take a stroll through the streets of the old town – don’t forget to stop in at one of the many bars for some traditional tapas! You might also want to take a walk along the impressive new waterfront area called ‘Muelle Uno’; definitely worth a visit!

2)      Option two is a little closer to home. The beach bars (chiringuitos) and restaurants in theSanta AnaBeacharea – near the windmill – is celebrating the ‘II Feria del Pescaito’. This basically means that you can dig into some fantastic fish dishes at unbeatable prices. Typical fried fish dishes such as Calamares or Boquerones will be available for just €4.5 per plate and shell fish dishes will be priced at €7 per plate – we’re basically talking half price here! If the weather stays as it has been for the past few days, you’d be mad not to take advantage of this great offer… Enjoy a leisurely stroll down the promenade and treat yourself to some of the best fish on the Coast 🙂

Selwo Marina and Selwo Aventura Open for the New Season

Selwo AventuraTwo of our favourite attractions on the Costa del Sol, Selwo Marina Dolphinarium and Selwo Aventura will be opening for the new season today (Friday 24th February 2012).

After a well earned winter break, these popular parks are ready to delight visitors with their unique facilities.

Selwo Marina Dolphinarium, located just minutes away from Sunset Beach Club, will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Special activities will be planned throughout the season to celebrate, so visiting the park is a must if you are visiting theCosta del Sol 🙂

Selwo Aventura, the wildlife adventure park located near Estepona (Approx. 1 hour drive from Sunset Beach Club) also opens to the public today. In a constant effort to reinvent the visitor experience, Selwo Aventura will be introducing new species and animals to their, already impressive, wildlife family. Here’s a quick list of the new attractions:

  • Two new Hippos – Margarita and Manolito (can’t get more Spanish than that!! ) – have been brought to the park in the hope that they’ll be able to add to the parks population with a little Manolito Hippo! The Masai Mara area of the park has been especially prepared to welcome the two Hippos and to make sure they feel at home.
  • HyenaTerritoryis one of the new installations which will be introduced this season. This is perfect opportunity to learn more about this roaming carnivore, vital for the African ecosystem.
  • The newLionTerritory. Located in the main village area of Selwo Aventura, this new feature will allow visitors to see the King of the Jungle up close!
  • The “Reserva de losLagos” area of the park will be the new home of the Sitatunga (don’t worry, I had to look it up too 😉 it’s a type of antelope) another African species.

If you are planning on visiting Sunset Beach Club for a holiday – and especially if you have kids –  make sure you include Selwo Marina Dolphinarium and Selwo Aventura on your list of ‘Places to see’, you’ll have a blast!

Jump on the 120 Bus for a Value-for-Money Day Out!

Benalmadena Bus route nº120

Reading through our latest reviews on Tripadvisor, I came across a very complementary comment by a guest who recently stayed with us at Sunset Beach Club.

Apart from his very kind words praising our facilities and friendly staff (thank you!), this guest also reminded me of our hotel’s fantastic location as a base to explore other areas and towns on the Costa del Sol. In particular, he made reference to the bus stop just outside the hotel and the fantastic nº120 bus! Yes, we have taxis outside the hotel, but the beauty the 120 bus is that it only costs €1.50 per trip 🙂 (more…)
