Art and Culture in MalagaMálaga city is quickly becoming one of the top cultural destinations in Europe. The impressive selection of museums coupled with the splendid weather enjoyed year-round make it a perfect choice for a cultural winter getaway.

Many of the city’s top museums offer unique temporary exhibitions to add to their already stunning permanent collections.

As it can often be complicated to find information about all these temporary exhibitions, we’ve put together a list of the main ones taking place over the winter months at the start of 2018 (January, February and March).

Please be aware that many of the exhibitions mentioned below end in January so you’ll have to be quick if you’d like to visit them!

‘Juegos de Luz: farola y fotografía’ (Playing with light: lighthouse and photography)

Málaga’s lighthouse – also referred to as ‘la Farola’- is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This beautiful exhibition portrays almost two centuries of existence thanks to the photographic archive of local photographer, Juan Antonio Fernández Rivero. The exhibition commemorates dates from the start to the end of the lighthouse’s construction (1816 and 1817).

‘The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones’ Exhibition

This photographic exhibition features images by British photographers Terry O’Neill and Gered Mankowitz. O’Neill was the first to take photos of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at the start of their careers and the first to publish these images in the press.

Gered Mankowitz is one of Rock & Roll’s most famous photographers and played a big part in creating the image associated with the Rolling Stones.

During the exhibition, there will also be a daily screening of the video documentary ‘Eight Days a Week’, directed by Ron Howard and featuring the Beatle’s early years up until their 1966 San Francisco performance.

Rubén Guerro: Familias Mínimas (rojo, amarillo y azul)

This exhibition explores pictorial space through ten paintings, concentrating on concepts such as the frame, the support or the edges. The work of Sevilla-born painter, Rubén Guerrero, constructs impossible structures which trick the eye.

Blobterre

Created by designer Matali Crasset, Blobterre is comprised of a multi-sensorial space for the artist’s exploration, creation and imagination. It’s a world in which you’ll be able to hear and feel nature and its’ species in continual evolution.

This work of fiction is made up of ‘Blobterres’ which grow in cities and are made up of green areas which have reclaimed space from the asphalt to offer a ‘breath of fresh air’ in the middle of an urban space. In the centre of these Blobterres you’ll find a Fl’om; a child who is half man half flower and who explains interesting information about the world of plants.

Daniel Buren Exhibition

French artist Daniel Buren is known for his powerful and easily-recognizable style: Three alternate lines with a specific width (8.7 cm) structure the different spaces. He is most famous for transforming the Pompidou’s transparent cube into the multi-coloured attraction it is today.

Somos plenamente libres. Las mujeres artistas y el surrealismo

The surrealist movement attracted many female artists due to its provocativeness. This fascinating exhibition features the works of Eileen Agar, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Valentine Hugo, Dora Maar and Lee Miller to name but a few.

These artist’s strong characters are reflected in more than 100 works of art including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and films brought together for this special occasion.

Dates: Until 28th January 2018

Juan Gris, María Blanchard and Cubism

Juan Gris is one of cubism’s key artists. In this exhibition located in the Carmen Thyssen Museum, you’ll be able to relate his later work with other artists with which he shared a friendship and creative similarities, artists such as María Blanchard, Jean Metzinger or André Lhote.

Alexéi and Andreas Jawlensky: The adventure of colour

You’ll find the work of Alexéi Jawlensky exhibited in museums all around the world. A colleague and friend of Kandinsky, Paul Klee and other artists of the early 20th century, his work is recognizable for its use of colour and the sun.

Dates: Until 4th February 2018.

‘Posters of the Revolution’ Exhibition

This exhibition highlights one of the Russian Revolutions most extraordinary artistic phenomena using visual language consisting in the use of simple symbols to convey their message to the people. The most important of these are the red flag (blood), the sun (a bright future) and chains (the struggle and oppression).

The Romanov Dynasty Exhibition

This exhibition features a collection of almost 250 works of art from artists who stood out during the contunuous reign of the Romanov Dynasty (17th to 20th Century) and includes paintings, sculptures and other works of art.
