Holi Festival of Colours in BenalmadenaNext Sunday the 3rd April Benalmádena celebrates its first official ‘Holi Festival of Colours’, the famous and colourful Hindu festivity which welcomes spring.

The local Hindu community have worked in conjunction with the Benalmadena Town Hall to prepare a fun and authentic event which is open to everyone. Once again, the local authorities have demonstrated their support of the many celebrations and traditions of Benalmadena´s multicultural population 🙂

The Holi Festival of Colours is an ancient tradition in India (we’re talking centuries!). Celebrating the arrival of spring this unique event also celebrates fertility, love and the triumph of good over evil. It’s one distinguishing factor? The use of colourful powders and water which participants throw at each other (see photo above)! Made from natural components and colours, they certainly make for an entertaining – although a little messy – afternoon of fun!

Capacity is limited so if you fancy participating, you need to register at the Hindu Temple of Saturday 2nd April between 5:00pm and 7:00pm. It’s 5€ to register and this includes a compulsory ‘Holi Kit’ for Sunday’s main event.

The fun starts with a countdown to a giant Holi Cloud filling the skies of Benalmadena with stunning colours before the official start of the 2km circuit participants will make their way around.

As well as the explosion of colours, participants will also be able to enjoy traditional Bollywood-style singing, dancing and food stalls serving delicious Indian food.

Quick tip: You probably won’t want to be wearing anything fancy as you’re guaranteed to get covered in colourful powder 🙂
