"Viva"
Last Saturday evening, guests enjoying a meal in our Oasis Restaurant were treated to a somewhat different musical experience: an impromptu performance by the “Viva” quartet, four very talented singers who are members of SABS, the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers.
Gail, Barbara, Anthea and Lyn were enjoying a relaxing weekend break at Sunset Beach Club and whilst dining in the hotel’s restaurant, were invited by hotel entertainer, Tina Rose, to get up and sing for our guests. For anyone who is unfamiliar with Barbershop harmony, Gail and the rest of the “Viva” quartet sing a cappella; basically, it’s unaccompanied vocal music. No music, no instruments, just four fantastic voices each with a distinctive tone. Great fun to watch and even better to listen to!
The “Viva” quartet hope to visit Sunset Beach Club again soon; who knows, we might even be able to persuade them to put on a show for us! In the meantime, they will be busy preparing for their associations annual get together, suitable named “En Armonía” (In Harmony) which takes place in Murcia from the 8th to the 11th April.
Anyone interested in Barbershop singing can find out more about the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers on www.sabs.es

Staff training here at Sunset Beach Club forms a key part of our Human Resource Management Strategy. Every year, staff from all departments take part in training courses designed to improve their skills and ultimately, to provide a better level of service to our guests.
Last year (2010), Jose Enrique from our Human Resource Department did a great job in organising training for over 30 members of staff. Thanks to the wonders of technology, much of the training was through online courses which made the logistics a little easier. Here’s a quick summary of some of the training that took place: (more…)

Chelo & Justin at the Sunset Beach Club Stand
My colleagues Claire, Chelo and I have just got back from a busy (and cold) weekend in Dublin! Chelo and I attended the Holiday World Show at the RDS where Sunset Beach Club had a stand (see photos) whilst Claire helped man the “Celebrations in Spain” (Our wedding planners) stand at the Bride of the Year Show at the RDS.
Both shows attracted thousands of visitors over the weekend and there was a lot of interest for the Sunset Beach Club product, both for general holiday enquiries at the Holiday World Show and for wedding enquiries at Bride of the Year! Hopefully those enquiries will result in firm bookings for later on in the year 😉
Here’s a few photos taken at both of the shows…….

Next week sees the 66th anniversary of the birth of Jamaica’s most famous musician: Robert Nesta Marley (6th February, 1945). As a tribute to this legend of Reggae, various cities around the world will join in this global project and celebrate their very own “Bob Marley Day”: Paris, London, New York, Buenos Aires and, of course, Kingston are some of the cities where Reggae lovers will be able to celebrate Bob Marley’s music (and his birthday!).
This year will be the first time that these festivals are held in Spain. Various Spanish cities will join in the festivities to celebrate “Bob Marley Day”: Alicante, Barcelona, Pamplona and Madrid will all join Málaga in organising their very own tributes to the King of Reggae.
Some of the best Spanish reggae musicians in today’s music scene as well as some international stars will take part in the various concerts organised around the country; all will be performing tributes to the Jamaican icon as well as some of their own material.
On Friday the 4th February in Málaga’s “Sala Vivero”, Reggae fans from all over the Costa del Sol and beyond can enjoy over 4 hours of live music from Brinsley Forde, the lead singer of British Band Aswad, Madrid based Ras Kuko and Bratt, The Mad Sensi Band, Malaga’s very own South Fire and Chalice Sound. “I Shot the Sheriff” “No woman no cry” “Exodus” “Could you be loved” “Jamming”; these are just some of the golden hits you’ll be able to listen to at this tribute concert.
A percentage of the ticket sales will be donated to the “Spanish Music Lessons” project; the brainchild of a local International Monetary Fund employee (from Santander) who is based in Kingston, Jamaica. This organisation is dedicated to teaching music to young children – between the ages of 8 and 12 – who live in the conflictive areas of downtown Kingston; they learn to read music, play the violin and learn about music.
Prices to the “Bob Marley Day” concert in Málaga are €10 if you buy now and €12 on the day….Bargain!
