jet 2 flights from malaga to edinburghGood news for all our Scottish guests: Jet 2 airways have just announced that they will be introducing new direct flights between Malaga and Edinburgh as from the 2nd April 2011.

Initially there will be two weekly flights, one on Wednesday and one on Saturday. I’ve just had a look on their website and they are advertising one way flights from 29.99 pounds including taxes J

This will actually be the 5th route connecting Málaga and the UK as the low cost airline already has regular flights to Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Blackpool.

Great news for Málaga and the Costa del Sol as it means that we can welcome more tourists from Scotland as well as allowing locals to jump on a direct flight to visit the beautiful city of Edinburgh!

Costa del Sol Christmas show at the Moonlight Bar

The Costa del Sol Christmas Show Programme

Update: Please note that the Christmas show programmed for Sunday the 19th December has been cancelled. The show on Monday 20th goes ahead as planned.

Christmas is just around the corner and to get us all into the festive spirit, there will be a fantastic christmas Show taking place in our Moonlight Bar the weekend before christmas.

Produced and performed by the team at Entertain in Spain, (they were also responsible for the hugely successful Back to the 40’s show a couple of months ago) the show is the perfect excuse to enjoy a fun evening out with all the family!

You’ll be treated to all your favourite christmas carols, songs and music, all performed by some of the most talented singers and performers on the Coast. The beauty of these shows is that you also have a large screen video show throughout the performance which complements the live singing;  it truly is a unique experience and a must see!

During the show’s interval, you be able to sample some warm mince pies and a glass of mulled wine; if you are lucky, you might also win one of the fantastic prizes in the Christmas Charity Raffle!

There will be two showings of the Costa del Sol Christmas Show: The first will be on Sunday the 19th December  (Update: the Sunday show has been cancelled) and the second on Monday the 20th December. The shows start at 8pm; tickets are €20 for adults and €12 for children under 12 and Senior Citizens. Please call 655 087 198 or visit www.entertaininspain.com to purchase tickets or for more information about the show.

Don’t forget…..write it down on your calendar; 19th and 20th December at the Moonlight Theatre at Sunset Beach Club Hotel in Benalmadena.

Glide Your Way Around Benalmadena on a Segway Tour

Segway tours in Benalmadena

Gliding through La Paloma Park in Benalmadena

You’ve probably seem them gliding through the streets of your local town or at least on television but, do you know what they are? The Segway personal transporter is actually the first ever self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device. It may look like a simple two wheeled electric scooter but, it is much more than that!

The Segway works through a concept called Dynamic Stabilization which enables it to work seamlessly with the body’s movements. So how on earth does it do that? Well, the Segway has built in gyroscopes and tilt sensors which monitor a rider’s gravity at about 100 times a second. This means that when the rider leans slightly forward, the Segway moves forward; likewise, when they lean back, it moves backwards. Pretty simple isn’t it? (more…)

New Addition to the Sunset Family!

Miguel, Sharon and Baby Carlos!

Look who just stopped by the office….. Miguel Marcos, our Operations Director with his wife, Sharon, and their new born son, Carlos!

Now that’s what I call a proud Dad! I have to say that Miguel doesn’t look like the typical newbie Dad with bags under the eyes due to sleepless nights! Miguel tells us that the reason for that is that Carlos is as good as gold at night and pretty much sleeps all the way through….. lucky Dad!

Congratulations to Miguel and Sharon!

Sunset Beach Club Collaborates with The National Golf Club Challenge

National Golf Club ChallengeWe’re very pleased to announce our collaboration with the National Golf Club Challenge which will take place in the UK on the 4th and 5th June 2011.

The idea for The Challenge was born out of a desire to assist the Help for Heroes charity in the UK.  Set up in 2007, the charity helps wounded soldiers returning home from combat.

The National Golf Club Challenge allows golfers throughout the UK to come together on one specific weekend and combine their love for golf with a show of support for injured service men and women. The idea is that participating clubs hold their own charity golf day (4th & 5th June 2010) to raise funds for Help for Heroes (last year over 400 clubs took part in the challenge!). Each club that participates will then return their top ten stableford scores from their challenge day; these scores will count as the club’s official aggregate score. The six top scoring clubs in the UK will then battle it out at a spectacular two day final event.

The main aim of the challenge is to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity; however, participating clubs will also have the chance to compete for the coveted National Golf Club Challenge Trophy; the Lee Westwood Cup.

Top teams will also have the added incentive of being able to win some great prizes, all donated by participating partners. This is where Sunset Beach Club and our sister resort La Cala have collaborated; donating a one week stay at Sunset Beach Club and 3 rounds of golf for 10 golfers.

This years challenge – the first ever – was an astounding success. To date, organizers have managed to raise 202,273 pounds and counting! So that’s the target to beat for the 2011 event…… we’ll certainly continue to support this remarkable initiative.

Video of Our New Nativity Scene Christmas Decorations

The team from Maintenance and Housekeeping have been busy all morning preparing our traditional Nativity Scene! Can you believe they did all this in just one morning……well done guys!

The word for Nativity Scene in Spanish is “Belén”. This traditional Christmas decoration is a must in most Spanish homes over the Christmas period!

I took a video of it so that you can see the details; it’s even got moving parts and running water!

60 Scuba Divers Take Part in the XIII Underwater Ecological Day Celebrated in Benalmadena Port

Last weekend, 60 scuba divers from two local clubs – the Delfines Scuba Diving Club and the Benalmadena Scuba Diving club – met at Puerto Marina to celebrate the XIII edition of the Underwater Ecological Day.

This is an initiative which takes place yearly, helping to shed awareness amongst the local community on the importance of keeping our underwater ecosystem clean and free of contaminants.

Looking after the environment in Benalmadena - Underwater ecological day

Some of the "Treasures" found in the waters of the Marina

This is how it works: All participants get allocated a specific area of the Marina and have to clean the interior underwater areas of the ports facilities. The objective is to recover and re-float all elements that damage the underwater ecosystem, above all, those that cause contamination, such as boat batteries, mobile phones, etc.

The results? Well, the divers managed to recover approximately two tons of rubbish and residues (see photo): Batteries, supermarket trolleys, a car windscreen, a microwave, various tires, mobile phones and even propellers from boats; these are just some of the “treasures” in the ports waters!

At the end of the event, there were prizes for divers who re-floated the biggest object, the most original, the one that caused most pollution and the most valuable.

No doubt that this is a great initiative which, we hope, will  be repeated all along our Coasts!

Sunset Beach Club Welcomes Delegates from the Irish Travel Agents Association

The Irish Travel Agents Association celebrated their annual conference last week in Málaga (19 & 20th November). As part of their social programme for the event, many of the delegates flew in early and spent two nights here at Sunset Beach Club.

On Wednesday afternoon, 16 delegates managed to squeeze in an enjoyable round of golf at Torrequebrada Golf, one of our partner courses.

The group met for a warm buffet breakfast on Thursday morning, before boarding a coach which took them to our sister resort at La Cala. Our spies tell us that it was a  challenging day of golf, with the America course proving difficult under very tricky conditions!

The Golf was followed by a prize giving dinner in our banquet hall on the 7th floor of the hotel. Our new Head Chef, Paul Tugwell, and his team prepared a fantastic meal which received great praise; a prize giving and live music with Ricky Lavazza rounded off a very enjoyable evening.

International Golf Travel Market

Debbie with Colleagues from La Cala Resort

Valencia is the hub of the Golf Travel industry this week with the International Golf Travel Market being held in the city (15-18 November 2010).

Over 600 golf tourism suppliers and 350 pre-qualified buyers and tour operators from over 65 countries have flocked to this Mediterranean city for this four day event dedicated to the world of golf travel.

Pre-scheduled appointments, networking opportunities and industry updates all make this one of the most important events in the Golf Travel calendar.

Our Commercial Director, Debbie Wallace, has just returned from IGTM after two busy days of meetings. Sharing a stand with our sister Resort of La Cala, Debbie was able to make contact with many new tour operators and touch base with long time partners. All in all, a fantastic networking event which will hopefully reap its rewards with more Golf business for our hotel!
